My all time favourite films!

Anybody who knows me will tell you I much prefer watching a DVD to going to the cinema and it seemed that my whole pregnancy was spent just watching DVDs in bed with bump Cameron. So, especially for you, I have compiled a list of my favourite films (and they are a weird mix!):

1. Meet Joe Black, 1998

I absolutely love this film! It's about a guy being visited by 'death' in the form of the gorgeous (at the time, now not so much!) Brad Pitt. He is given extra time with his family before he dies in exchange for allowing death to 'vacation' with him. But the guy's daughter ends up falling in love with death and this complicates things slightly. From the synopsis I just wrote it sounds like an utterly rubbish film, but it isn't! If you haven't seen it, please do! The end scene has never once failed to make me cry like a baby, huge tears streaking mascara... It's because the guy reminds me so much of my grandad who died when I was 12. I know when I watch this film it will end in tears, the music is beautiful. I just love it. A quote from it is so true:

'Love is passion, obsession, someone you can't live without. If you don't start with that, what are you going to end up with? Fall head over heels. I say find someone you can love like crazy and who'll love you the same way back. And how do you find him? Forget your head and listen to your heart. I'm not hearing any heart. Run the risk, if you get hurt, you'll come back. Because, the truth is there is no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love - well, you haven't lived a life at all. You have to try. Because if you haven't tried, you haven't lived'.

Meet Joe Black

2. Basic Instinct, 1992

This is an old favourite, back when I was a bad girl! It was my 'seduction' film as I always put it on when I had a guy over when both of us knew where things were going to go and there was no point putting a film on I actually wanted to watch. Plus, the film itself is pretty sexy in parts. The basic concept is a murder has taken place and the prime suspect happens to be a wealthy authoress (Sharon Stone) who ends up getting sexually involved with the case detective (played by Michael Douglas). The story has a lot of, often violent, sex in it. There's an ongoing theme with an ice pick, lesbians, and it's a psychological thriller. This is the main reason I love it, apart from the sex, as I love psychology since studying it for A Levels. I love how films like this can keep you guessing until the last minute.

Basic Instinct

3. Stepmom, 1998

Another film that makes me cry every time I watch it! I seem to love making myself cry... This one is about the tough relationship between the mother of two kids (Susan Sarandon) and the girlfriend of her ex husband, the kids' stepmum (Julia Roberts). When the mum ends up being diagnosed with cancer, which gets worse, she ends up reluctantly having to befriend the stepmum. At the end of the film it is obvious the mum is about to die and the family, along with the stepmum, spend a final Christmas together. The saddest scene for me is when the pair are discussing things and this line comes up:

Isabel:  Don't you get it? Look down the road to her wedding. I'm in a room alone with her, fixing her veil, fluffing her dress, telling her no woman has ever looked so beautiful. And my fear is she'll be thinking, "I wish my mom was here."
Jackie Harrison: And mine is... she won't.

And there I go, crying my eyes out! It's even worse now I'm a mum myself! There's also a scene where the mum and kids dance crazily to Ain't no mountain high enough which also gets me as it's something me and my mum and brothers would do when I was younger and I simply couldn't imagine losing her. This is definitely a film to watch with tissues!

Stepmom

4. Bride of Chucky, 1998

This is a strange film for me to like as I am terrified of dummys and puppets! I watched an earlier chucky film once round an ex's house after it came on the tv and he went to switch it off but I decided to try and cure my phobia. It was a pretty crap film as I can't stand older movies so I watched Bride of Chucky as it was more modern. It's like a horror comedy rather than just horror and I think it's hilarious! I also like Seed of Chucky but found that one a bit too in your face 'funny'. I love Jennifer Tilly who plays Tiffany in the films and her voice is so distinctive! She is gorgeous in a less obvious way than blonde hair and tiny figure. The film follows on from the previous 3 with Chucky, a serial killer, being trapped inside a kids toy. The love of his life, Tiffany, recovers him from the police station and brings the doll back to life. She then ends up getting turned into a doll herself by Chucky and the pair go off on a killing spree, getting an innocent young couple caught up in their mayhem. The young girl is played by Katherine Heigl, she looks so young! In the end, a dying Tiffany gives birth to a baby which paves the way for the next film.

Bride of Chucky

5. The Sweetest Thing, 2002

This is a more lighthearted film. It reminds me of my two uni friends Abi and Georgie as we were very much like the three women in this film when we were all at Uni together. Its a great comedy! Think more there's something about mary than forgetting sarah marshall kind of  funny. The concept is a bit silly, though some of it I could see happening. A girl (Cameron Diaz) meets a guy in a club and they have a moment but then she resigns herself to never see him again though her friend has other ideas and so they set off to his brothers wedding to find him. And so ensues a hilarious road trip, which has the Pina Colada song in, and lots of funny random things along the way. The endings a bit of a dissapointment and a bit cringey, but the lead up to it makes me laugh and smile so I let it off. One to watch with your best girl friends with a bottle of wine and lots of bad food!

The Sweetest Thing

6. Se7en, 1995

Another horror. This one is based on the seven deadly sins and I found it was a nice change from all the same old horror storylines I was watching at the time when I first saw this. It is a cleverly put together storyline following a murderer who is killing those committing the crimes of the 7 deadly sins:  wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony. Two detectives (Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman) are on the hunt for him when he hands himself in. But there comes a twist. It's a good one, and I don't want to spoil it for people who haven't seen it so I won't. But it is definitely worth a watch! There is one very disturbing scene involving a man with a strap on knife forced to have sex with a prostitute whilst wearing it. Despite not seeing this happen, it is described by the man and it makes me shiver. A nice, messed up film to match my mood sometimes.

7. Sliding Doors, 1998

I love the idea of this story! I believe that everything we do happens for a reason and that tiny insignificant details in your day to day life can shape your destiny. This film shows a woman's (Gwyneth Paltrow) life in parallel as to whether she managed to catch the tube or not. It is a great film with a tense climax. You really feel yourself wanting the woman to be happy and for life to work out right for her in the end and I'm happy to say that it does. A good quote from it:

Lydia: Gerry, I'm a woman! We don't say what we WANT! But we reserve the right to get pissed off if we don't get it. That's what makes us so fascinating! And not a little bit scary.

Sliding Doors

8. Wild Things, 1998

It would seem 1998 was a good year for films I like! This is another film I find sexy and it's also another Psychological Thriller with an excellent set of twists to it, win win...It follows the story of a couple of school girls and their teacher trying to get money by scamming everyone else. But things don't go to plan, or do they? The line:

Detective Ray Duquette: People aren't always what they appear to be. Don't forget that!

Pretty much sums the film up! It's a great storyline that keeps you guessing until the very end and worth watching if you're kinky like me just for the threesome scene. It also features Neve Campbell and Denise Richards!

Wild Things

So, those are my top 8 of all time. My top films on any one day will change constantly so I won't bore you with a list!
